Deep Creek Lake in Maryland has been a wonderful vacation spot for decades bringing in families all over the United States. From the endless boating to hiking and skiing, Garrett county has welcomed frequent visitors into Western Maryland, creating memories that could last a lifetime. Though the lake and state parks draw in thousands of people each year, the area has not always been known as the four seasons vacation destination that it is now. Here is a look into the Deep Creek Lake history and the surrounding area.
Early 1900’s

In the early 1900s, Deep Creek Lake was once littered with farms, schools, and private residences. The idea to bring power and electricity to the area by implementing the use of the Youghiogheny River is the turning point for the area. The planning began in 1908 however, they were not successful. In 1921, the Youghiogheny Hydroelectric corporation was given access to start the construction of dams across Deep Creek and the Youghiogheny River. In 1923 they began looking for their real estate transaction that would cost $55 in total. This would cover the price of entire farms that were purchased, not because they would be flooded by the dam or lake but because the road to travel to them would be compromised. The surveys laid out four Deep Creek dams and three powerhouses, one of which would be located near the confluence of Deep Creek and the Yough. Even though plans were drawn for all four dams and three powerhouses, by the time of completion only the original dam and powerhouse were finished as it would be financially self-sufficient.
After taking almost 2 years to complete the project the plant opened on May 26, 1925. Today the earth in rock hill dam remains much as it was then. Reaching up to 1340 feet long and about 1.75 miles upstream, the water from the lake is transported to the powerhouse three 7000 foot power tunnels.
Recreation Of The Lake

But all the locals certainly got their fair share of enjoyment out of the lake, tourism wasn’t quite as popular back then. The winters were spent with the lake being frozen over, which caused the local residents to use their imaginations when it came to navigating outside. Local mechanics would build ice boats or even areas to go ice fishing. This made the lake an enjoyable place to be no matter what season.
As the Deep Creek Lake activities started to become more popular, anglers all over started to travel to the lake in hopes of writing a pontoon and catching the best fish around, or coming to experience ice fishing. People would come from surrounding areas like Baltimore, Oakland, Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, and much more to see what all the chatter was about.

There are 6 different trails that each offer a unique experience for hikers of all ability levels. For those who are wanting to pick up the speed in the state forest, try mountain biking. One of the most popular trails is the Brant Mine Trail, the half-mile trail leads hikers and bikers to the site of the historic Brant cal mine and homesite. The Brant family owned and worked at the mine where they supplied bituminous coal to the local residents for heating and blacksmithing purposes.
The Discovery Center
The Discovery Center is operated by the Department of Natural Resources and it strives to bring people and the natural environment together through their interactive programs. The park rangers and naturalists will lead hikes pointing out a variety of things like trees, wildflowers, birds to watch, and much more. The educational talks can range from black bear management, area endangered species, trail etiquette, and even boating safety. This is also the area you can find gifts and souvenirs for those outdoorsy friends you may be shopping for.

The Deep Creek Lake State Park is the only public boat ramp within the park. It is open year-round unless the weather isn’t permitting. There is also a transient visitor dock for those who travel to the park by boat. You can cast a line off from the dock and catch some dinner. Within the lake, you can expect to catch trout, walleye, bass, and yellow perch. There are several fishing docks located around the state park so there is plenty of room for the whole family.

Guests often ask us a rather pivotal question: “What should I do while in Deep Creek?” To help answer that question, we’ve put together a hour-by-hour itinerary of some of our favorite things you can do in a single day.
One Day in Deep Creek
9am: Wake up and take coffee out on the deck or dock. There is nothing better than slowly greeting the day from the comfort of your rental home. Whether you are perched high above the trees, overlooking the lake far below, like at Peregrine’s Perch, lakeside on the dock, like at UnWined, or cozy under the trees, like at Wispy on the Rocks. Deep Creek is full of charming perches from which to greet the day. Don’t rush this step.

Coffee from here, perhaps? (www.redbarnvacations.com/)
10am: Let’s crack some eggs for a big breakfast at home. All our rental homes come with fully stocked kitchens, some with double appliances, and large dining room tables. This is the perfect opportunity to gather everyone near for a bountiful morning spread. Don’t feel like cooking? Contact us before your stay and we can share the fabulous pre-fixed breakfast options available for delivery from a private catering chef.

There’s room for the whole crew at UnWined! (www.redbarnvacations.com/)
11am: Hit the road! If you are a two-coffee person, like some of us at Red Barn Vacations, we recommend swinging by Canoe on the Run in McHenry or Trader’s Coffee House in Oakland for a cup of something delicious from these quick and charming local cafes. Once you are good and awake, head out to one of the area’s many amazing hikes. For new-comers to the area, you’ve got to hit Swallow Falls State Park to see Maryland’s largest waterfall in a picture-perfect setting. For others, we’d recommend the Snaggy Mountain Rock Maze. This uniqued spot is lightly trafficked, but full of towering boulders that form a unique, natural maze. Kids and adults love it!

Photo curtesy of Snaggy Mountain’s ‘Only in Your State Feature’ : (https://www.onlyinyourstate.com/)
1pm: Grab lunch! Some of our new favorite local places include the Vagabond Taproom, for lite fare along with an excellent selection of beer, or the Cassleman Cafe for sandwiches, salads, and yummy desserts.

2pm: From there, head to the Silver Tree Marine in central Deep Creek Lake to rent kayaks of Stand-Up Paddleboards by the hour. This marina has a great location for exploring the lake.

4pm: Next up, we’d check out the Branch Bender Cidery in Accident (town just before you hit the lake), as well as the Deep Creek Lavender Farm, also in Accident. If you are staying at our new home, Mulligan Manor, you’ll want to grab a Tee Time at Lodestone Golf Course, which backs the home.

Tasting Area at Branch Bender Cidery

View of Lodestone Golf Course from Our Home, Mulligan Manor (www.redbarnvacations.com/)
6pm: While there are many awesome restaurants all across the lake, we are big fans of home-cooked barbecues. All our homes come with outdoor seating and outdoor grills. Take advantage of these amazing outdoor spaces before setting in for an evening of food, movie-watching, billards playing, hot tubbing and more. (Although, you may want to make a quick run out to the Lakeside Creamery for after-dinner ice cream. Just saying!)

Enjoy the lake from the deck at Bella Vista (www.redbarnvacations.com/)
(Bonus: Bella Vista is RIGHT NEXT DOOR to the Lakeside Creamery!)
Sounds like the perfect day to us!
