Deep Creek Lake State Park is one of Western Maryland’s Garrett County prize possessions. Enjoy an afternoon fishing, swimming, hiking, picnicking, or just relaxing on the sandy beach. The beach is protected by lifeguards throughout the summer, and it is the perfect place to catch a tan and take a break from the hustle and bustle. Enjoy time with the family as the grill master of the family steps up and makes a nice meal that can be enjoyed at the picnic tables located next to the grill. There are also playgrounds, restrooms, and many other areas to explore while you are here.

Spend a day on the beautiful lake or hike to a historic coal mine: the opportunities for fun are endless at Deep Creek Lake State Park! This beautiful state park is located at the base of Meadow Mountain and has been open to the public since 1959. The park offers over one full mile of shoreline and includes a beach area, too. You can head to the beach and frolic in the water all day, or you can gear up at their boat docks for an exciting day on the water.

Hiking Trails

For those hikers who are itching to get out on the trail, there are over 9 miles of trails to explore on Meadow Mountain. The beautiful and lush stands of oaks will have you never wanting to leave. There are 6 different trails that each offer a unique experience for hikers of all ability levels.  For those who are wanting to pick up the speed in the state forest, try mountain biking. One of the most popular trails is the Brant Mine Trail, the half-mile trail leads hikers and bikers to the site of the historic Brant cal mine and homesite. The Brant family owned and worked at the mine where they supplied bituminous coal to the local residents for heating and blacksmithing purposes.

The Discovery Center

The Discovery Center is operated by the Department of Natural Resources and it strives to bring people and the natural environment together through their interactive programs. Each visitor has the opportunity to learn about the fauna, wildlife, flora, and the history of the park and area through their hands-on exhibits and educational programs that they have in place. The park rangers and naturalists will lead hikes pointing out a variety of things like trees, wildflowers, birds to watch, and much more. The educational talks can range from black bear management, area endangered species, trail etiquette, and even boating safety. This is also the area you can find gifts and souvenirs for those outdoorsy friends you may be shopping for.

Boat Launch

The Deep Creek Lake State Park is the only public boat ramp within the park. It is open year-round unless the weather isn’t permitting. There is also a transient visitor dock for those who travel to the park by boat. You can cast a line off from the dock and catch some dinner. Within the lake, you can expect to catch trout, walleye, bass, and yellow perch. There are several fishing docks located around the state park so there is plenty of room for the whole family.

There are several other parks in the area that you may want to check out like the Swallow Falls State Park, Big Run State Park, New Germany State Park, Sang Run State Park, or the Herrington Manor State Park for those looking for even more trails and fun. We hope to see you soon here in Deep Creek Lake at the State Park!

The address to the park is 898 State Park Road Swanton, Maryland 21561
